Gaddum To Global for Bio-Medicines
Fortune magazine recently featured the next generation of ‘Technology Pioneers’. The review focused on the work of key individuals who are doing their best to create new industries out of old ones.

In this opening presentation one of these pioneers will explain his commitment to making patented cost-affordable bio-medicines for patients who currently receive no treatment. His underlying concept is inventing, developing and manufacturing novel compounds based upon our understanding of patented medicines with important therapeutic benefits. At present, their cost impairs access to the global community.

Professor Shaunak is from the new generation of pharmaceutical entrepreneurs. He has a zeal for creativity and thinking outside the box. His keynote promises to be thought-provoking as it explores the exciting new pharmaceutical horizons becoming available to our global community in the 21st Century.

Professor Sunil Shaunak, Professor of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College and Hammersmith Hospital London and a co-founder of PolyTherics

Managing the Regulatory Minefield
The political and legal framework in which pharma operates is serving as a huge deterrent from taking risks that are required to produce genuinely innovative new therapies. Recent actions from the FDA have significantly raised the bar for the approval of novel therapeutics. Given that the raison d’etre of drug companies is to develop therapeutic compounds, additional constraints imposed by the FDA and other regulatory bodies will only serve to stifle innovation.

In this session we explore how some companies have navigated through the adversity of moving goal posts and negative responses from the regulators, sharing with us strategies to manage their business in this cautious approval climate.

Keynote: A New Strategic Approach – The Eli Lilly Network Strategy
No company can ever stand still and Eli Lilly and Company is no exception. As the industry finds itself facing ever greater challenges their response has been to reconsider their corporate strategy and move from being a fully integrated pharmaceutical company and become a fully integrated pharmaceutical network.

This shift in strategy will impact every single part of the value chain from R&D to manufacturing through to sales and marketing as well as all the supporting functions that support the business as a whole. It will involve both traditional partnering and outsourcing arrangements and embrace new and innovative approaches.

In Gino Santini’s presentation he will share with you the strategic drivers for this change, the opportunities this new model will provide as well as the challenges presented by undertaking such strategic change.

The Ultimate Attraction—Creating Shareholder Value
Just how do biotechnology and biopharmaceutical companies best create shareholder value. There is probably no right answer to this question and some will succeed where others fail. In this session we’ll explore the different strategies and approaches undertaken by discussing the personal experiences of our panel. Thus providing an insight into the variety of ways of creating value including: partnering arrangements that maximize the value of assets; going it alone with the intent of commercializing independently; and how to respond when the “activist shareholder comes knocking” amongst others.

Businesses fit for the future
In January, the possibility of a recession loomed over many economies. After stock markets experienced steep plunges and stirring comebacks in a single week, investors were left searching for clues as to whether the market's troubles were over or if more pain lay ahead.

So what does this mean for the pharma and biotech sectors? Is it business as usual or will big pharma companies become targets for private equity as their value plummets to accessible levels, and what might this mean for other stakeholders within the sector? The current credit crunch has seen some reduction in private equity's ability to acquire pharma assets but many feel that this is only temporary.

Our panelists have all experienced business change in the last few years and will share their insights as we consider what the business model of the future might be for this sector.

Closing keynote: Big Pharma and Biotech: Evolution, Not Revolution
The pharmaceutical and biotech industries’ symbiotic relationship has developed over the past thirty years. As the healthcare environment changes, and we face both opportunities and challenges, these relationships will continue to progress, not only in the traditional sense of research and development, but also with respect to strategic, commercial and geographic elements. International alliances, co-developments, and co-promotions are integral for the future of our business and are gaining momentum. Non-traditional pharmaceutical and biotech relationships will continue to evolve and strengthen as we move forward in the global healthcare environment.
